    In Behind the Angel of History: The Angelus Novus and Its Interleaf Annie Bourneuf considers Paul Klee’s painting in light of a discovery made in 2015 by the artist R. H. Quaytman: sandwiched between Klee’s watercolor angel and its cardboard backing, on the interleaf, is an engraving of Martin Luther. The image of the reformer, which turns out to be a 19th-century print after the style of the Luther portraits made by Lucas Cranach the Elder (35, 51), serves as the point of departure for a reexamination not only of the painting itself, but also of its role as a lodestone within philosophical and art historical discourses into the twenty-first century. Contextualizing the Angelus novus within some of the artistic, intellectual, and political currents active around the time of its creation, Bourneuf’s eruditely researched study restores to Klee’s painting a complexity and ambiguity of meaning that also sheds new light on its most prominent recipient.
